Roman programme: what we stage at a Roman fair

A Roman fair has a different audience from a medieval one: it is booked mostly by towns with an archaeological site, a Roman road or an established historical re-enactment, and the council usually wants something that fits that identity.
This is the programme we take to that kind of event, with the same parade and static show formats but with Roman period costume, characters and music.
You can also see the page for this theme, with videos and photographs of real performances.
The shows in the programme

Gods of Olympus
Stilt walkers costumed as Roman deities. They move through the site with solemn bearing, hand out decrees and let themselves be photographed. It is the gala entrance of the programme.

The legion
Legionaries who move among the stalls with skill and, when the moment comes, form up in battle order. It works especially well at re-enactments with a Roman camp.

Bacchus
The Roman version of the enchanted forest: fauns and creatures that dance to the beat of drums and vanish into the crowd leaving an air of mystery behind.

Barbarians
Warriors and druids who raise the tension as the afternoon closes in, with sabres and steel juggling. The most physical act in the programme.

Fire show
A night closing with real fire and narration. At a Roman fair we stage it with a look of ritual and bonfire that fits the rest of the setting.

Children's entertainment
Storytelling, balloon modelling and a bubble workshop, adapted to the theme. It is the part of the programme families are most grateful for.
